An increasing number of scientists at ETH Zurich are using open access to publish their research findings – meaning knowledge can be shared without restriction and used free of charge.

The Research Collection statistics reveal current trends: researchers continue to intensively study topics relating to COVID-19, open access is being used more frequently, and the number of downloads is also rising.

Research data published in the Research Collection can now also be found in the Data Citation Index.

The concluded Read-and-Publish agreements cover both the costs of access and publishing in the relevant scientific journals. The costs are covered by the ETH Library.

We have made some changes to the current Research Collection statistics. The infographic has a new, slimmer design and the statistics themselves will be published quarterly from now on. In the future, we will also be more flexible in selecting the types of publication presented.

The open-access share for the year 2020 rose by 3% in May: the share was 38%. This is the highest open-access percentage ever recorded in our statistics. We hope, of course, that with your help we will be able to increase this proportion even further.

The topic of coronavirus is not yet reflected in the current download figures of the Research Collection. However, immunology and virology are not main topics at ETH Zurich and there are only a few publications.

We published the first infographic on the use of the Research Collection in April 2019. This year’s first infographic presents the annual review for 2019.

In November, the number of journal article downloads fell to 52,273. This is still the third highest figure in 2019, after the unusually high figures in October.

In October 2019, the number of journal article downloads reached a new record level. More than 70,000 downloads were made in a single month.

The highest Altmetric Score in September was achieved by an article dealing with the influence of an astronomical event on the paleoclimate.
