Courses and tutorials on databases
We offer courses about the subject-specific databases licensed by the ETH Library for groups of at least five people, as well as tutorials, by arrangement.
Workshops
Our workshops are open to all scientists. For groups of five or more persons we organize individual workshops . The workshop series Research data management and related topics was developed in cooperation with Scientific IT Services.

Doctoral candidates at ETH Zurich are required to submit a doctoral plan within their first year. In this workshop, you’ll gain not only theoretical knowledge but also practical tools and tips – whether you're developing your research idea or structuring your text. This course introduces doctoral students to AI-based tools and library resources that can support their research process. It combines practical application of these tools with critical reflection on the role of generative AI in academic work. Further information and registration can be found on this page.
This two-day block course is aimed at doctoral students in their first two years. It covers key aspects of writing scientific papers in English and equips you with the skills needed to write your firstpaper. The course is hands-on and interactive. Participants receive 1 ECTS. This semester-long course (3 ECTS) is aimed at doctoral students from D-EAPS and D-USYS who want to strengthen key skills for a successful doctorate. Through a blend of workshops, hands-on assignments, and peer-led sessions, students will enhance their ability to produce high-quality scientific writing. The course also covers a range of research-support areas, including generative AI tools, effective presenting, academic projectmanagement, data visualization, smart notetaking, and publishing. Coffee Lectures
The Coffee Lectures give you a short and compact insight into the practical application of tools in fifteen minutes. Afterwards you can ask questions. The online events take place on selected Wednesday afternoons at 3.15 p.m.
Moodle self-study courses
- In the course AI-based tools for scientific writing and research you will find extensive information on generative AI and AI-based tools in connection with literature search, reading, writing and learning.
You will find out which generative AI tools are available to members of ETH Zurich, what their strengths and weaknesses are, as well as the function, opportunities and risks of large language models. You will also receive tips on how to prompt effectively, which use cases are recommended and how you can create your own tools. You can consolidate what you have learnt in exercises and will be sensitised to scientific integrity and plagiarism. The self-study course is continuously updated and expanded. - In the course Ready for take-off: how to start your Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis, you will find out about what they need to do at the beginning of a research and writing project to ensure a successful Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis.
