Lecture on assessing research quality
Join us on 13 November 2024 for the fifth lecture of the Swiss Year of Scientometrics (SYoS), hosted by ETH Library and University of Fribourg. Prof. Bart Thijs will discuss new approaches to assessing the quality of research.
The idea of accountability for research institutions receiving public funds based on the quality and impact of their research sparked already sixty years ago. What was a groundbreaking concept at the time has now become a reality: governments, agencies and bodies governing research institutions are seeking to develop and implement methods and procedures to improve and evaluate the quality and impact of research.
The quantitative methods originally developed to assess productivity and quality, based on the number of publications, citations, and journal impact factors, are no longer sufficient. New challenges are emerging from the evolving scientific landscape and changing societal expectations. Today, research evaluation must not only take diversity, inclusion, and transparency into account, but also integrate additional or alternative approaches.
In his lecture, Prof. Bart Thijs will dive into the evolving concept of research quality and its multifaceted nature. He will spotlight new initiatives in research evaluation that seek to respond to these challenges.
The lecture will take place on 13 November 2024 from 17.00 to 18.30. The venue is University of Fribourg, MIS 03 3113, Avenue de l’Europe 20, 1700 Fribourg. This event will be held in English.
All attendees are warmly invited to join the "Apéro" afterwards.
