A burning passion for standard works and rare publications in the field of volcanology

Head to e-rara.ch and explore the amazing range of information available on volcanology in the Gottfried Immanuel Friedlaender collection.

The ETH Library Rare Books collection contains a large number of works from the private library of Gottfried Immanuel Friedlaender (1871–1948), which are now available online in the external page Immanuel Friedlaender private library collection.

The German-Swiss volcanologist, institute founder and editor of the first “Volcanological review” (1914) collected valuable rare books that are of great importance for the history of science and for research being carried out today. Following the closure of the international volcano institute in Naples in the mid-1930s, the entire holdings of the library, including the photograph and image collection and the collection of volcanic rocks, were donated to ETH Zurich.

Further works from the private library of Gottfried Immanuel Friedlaender are currently being systematically identified and added to the collection.
