Retrospective digitisation in research and teaching

Panel discussion on 20 April 2021 at 2.00 p.m. for the tenth anniversary of the e-rara platform

Since its go-live in 2010, external page e-rara, the platform for digitised rare books from Swiss institutions, has established itself as a service for research and teaching, but also for the interested public. Due to a one-year delay because of COVID-19, we would like to celebrate the platform's 10th anniversary with you in a virtual panel discussion.
Experts will discuss, among other things, the importance of e-rara and other digital platforms for research and what forms of collaboration they enable. Questions from the audience will also be welcome. We look forward to your participation!

Programme

Presentation

In the presentation, the goals and intentions of e-rara at its foundation will be compared with what has been achieved in the first ten years. What was the intention of the project? Have the goals been achieved? What distinguishes e-rara? And what developments have there been during e-rara's operation? Finally, the specific success factors of the platform for digitised prints from Swiss libraries are analysed.

After studying history and completing his doctorate at the University of Zurich, Rudolf Mumenthaler was Head of the Special Collections at the ETH Library from 1997 to 2009 and Head of Innovation and Marketing from 2009 to 2012. During this time, he initiated the e-rara project, among others. From 2012 to 2017, he was Professor of Library Science at the HTW Chur (University of Applied Sciences and Arts Graubünden), from 2017 to 2020, he was Director of the ZHB Lucerne and since 2021 he has been Director of the University Library of Zurich, which is currently under set-up.
