Challenges in metadata management Data management is becoming increasingly important for many organisations in Switzerland. The significance of metadata within the scope of process definitions must not be underestimated here. Without the corresponding data documentation, for example, research data carries little clout as its importance is no longer tangible. Often, this dilemma forces staff at research data facilities into the realm of follow-up documentation. This talk demonstrates the use of data life cycle models, and provides examples of different metadata standards and the relevant use of tool chains for data documentation.
Prof. Ingo Barkow has worked at HTW Chur since 2015, initially as a lecturer in data management, as a professor since 2017 and as Head of the Swiss Institute for Information Science since 2019. He gathered his experience of metadata and data management in both the private sector and research: for instance, he ran an IT training company in the Würzburg area for many years, where his responsibilities ranged from server administration and data analysis to business intelligence throughout Europe. He gained additional experience, particularly in data management, at the Leibniz Institute for Research and Information and Education (DIPF) in
Frankfurt as Technical Director for software implementation in the entire repository infrastructure and for the provision of IT services for major international education studies such as PISA or PIAAC. After completing his combined MA in contemporary social history and English language and literature in Frankfurt, he obtained a diploma in business information systems (University of Applied Sciences), and subsequently a doctorate in metadata management for large-scale education studies at the University of Szeged, Hungary.
