Digital Scholarship Services
The Digital Scholarship Services of the the ETH Library develop innovative projects and services at the interface between digitized collections and digital research. At the center of the activities is the idea of "Collections as Data". In addition to traditional forms of use, new perspectives on digital collections are developed. This often takes the form of collaborations with researchers. This results in a diverse catalog of projects that reflects the different approaches to "Collections as Data." These projects deal, for example, with the structure of digitized documents, with different ways of indexing and evaluating the textual content, or with methods for automated image recognition.
In order to be able to optimally support future activities in this area in the sense of co-creation, the Digital Scholarship Services unit is also working on innovative projects of its own. These include the development of a machine learning infrastructure, support in the planning and implementation of digital editions from our holdings, and the development of low-threshold learning offers. The use of the available interfaces also plays an important role.
Current Projects
- Algorithmic Data Layer: Within the framework of the "Algorithmic Data Layer" project, procedures (Named Entity Recognition / Named Entity Linking) are being tested and developed in order to find names in large text collections with the help of machine learning and to link them with external resources - so-called norm data. Building on this information, new forms of data access can be developed. An example of this is the external page E-Periodica Next Level Access project.
- Digital edition of Max Frisch's notebooks (cooperation with the Max Frisch Archive): With the digital edition of Max Frisch's notebooks, a significant part of Max Frisch's estate is made publicly accessible for the first time. At the same time, the project serves as a pilot for future editions from the holdings of the collections and archives of the ETH Library. Digital Scholarship Services is supporting the project in setting up the digital edition environment and establishing a standardized workflow.
