Biology

Here you can find a structured compilation of scientifically relevant new acquisitions and electronic media for the field of biology.

These databases (selection) support you in your studies and research:

  • external pageBiosis Previews – The world’s most comprehensive bibliographical database in the field of biosciences – Further information
  • external pageWeb of Science – Interdisciplinary database including the Derwent Innovations Index (patents), Web of Science Core Collection (journal articles), MEDLINE, Science Citation Index and Journal Citation Reports – Further information
  • external pageScopus – Interdisciplinary, the most comprehensive bibliographic database with respect to the number of journals covered, particular focus on non-anglophone literature, enables citation analyses and includes unique author IDs, provides full MEDLINE coverage – Further information
  • external pageEmbase – After PubMed, this is the most important biomedical literature database. In addition to the articles indexed by MEDLINE, it includes over six million records from 2,900 mainly European journals. Also comprised are all Cochrane reviews and, since 2009, conference proceedings. Thanks to the Emtree thesaurus, specific searches are possible.
  • external pagePubMed – Medical data pool, main source for biomedicine, free access – Further information
  • external pageTAIR – contains all genetic and molecular biological information on Arabidopsis thaliana. In addition to the complete genome sequences, the website provides information on gene structure, gene products, gene expressions, seed stocks and genome maps.
  • external pageBioCyc – contains datasets from diverse sources on metabolic pathways and genomes of thousands of model eukaryotes and microorganisms, some manually curated. With various software tools for searching, visualising, comparing and analysing.
  • external pageKEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) – this database resource allows for a systematic analysis of high-level functions of biological systems using data at the genomic and molecular levels.

Analog or digital, the most important reference books are available for you:

  • external pageHSTalks – The Biomedical and Life Sciences Collection contains over 3,000 specially prepared, animated, seminar-style lectures, given by leading world experts. They can be used as introductory lectures, although they are just as suitable for advanced audiences. The collection is continuously expanded and updated.
  • external pageFaculty Opinions (formerly F1000 Prime) – This personalised literature service for finding relevant articles is supported by a global so-called "faculty" consisting of over 8000 leading scientists in biology and medicine. All selected articles are reviewed by experts, categorised and supplemented with a short comment describing their scientific value.
  • external pageEuropean Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) – Research and service centre in bioinformatics, part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). Searchable biological databases including nucleic acids, protein sequences and macromolecular structures.
  • external pageInfo Flora – Swiss floristic data and information centre
  • external pageVogelwarte Sempach – All about birds in Switzerland
