Using rare, old prints and maps from the ETH Library's collection, the new exhibition showcases places, landscapes, and architectural monuments that have been lost or altered due to various circumstances.

The influence of nature and humans

Some areas have been affected by natural geological changes or disasters, while historical cityscapes show how and where humans have left their mark, thus conveying a multifaceted picture of the social and cultural aspects of earlier eras. Often, these are striking buildings, such as the Wellenberg Tower in Zurich or magnificent fin de siècle hotel buildings, which had to make way for new transport routes and buildings. Landslides such as the ‘Goldau landslide’ and the Elm rockslide were impressive natural events that permanently altered the landscape. Let these 'mosaic stones of forgotten landscapes' transport you back to times long past.
