In a world facing complex environmental problems, science is looking for ways to find answers on a global scale. Traditional research methods often reach their limits when it comes to creating large-scale and accurate models of our ecosystems. However, the combination of modern deep learning with satellite data opens doors for a comprehensive assessment of nature.

At the next 17:15 colloquium at the ETH Library, Jan Dirk Wegner, a researcher in the field of machine learning, will present his ongoing work. His data-driven approach promises great potential for achieving transparent and globally consistent assessments of our environment. In the lecture, Wegner will present methods for estimating environmental parameters such as snow depth as well as vegetation parameters such as biomass or vegetation height.

Don't miss the opportunity to learn more about Wegner's deep learning methods and how they can help address global challenges in environmental sciences and geosciences.

Prof. Dr Jan Dirk Wegner holds the “Data Science for Sciences” chair at the Department of Mathematical Modeling and Machine Learning (DM3L), University of Zurich, as an Associate Professor and is head of the EcoVision Lab at ETH Zurich.
His main research interests are at the frontier of machine learning, computer vision, and remote sensing to solve scientific questions in the environmental sciences and geosciences.
He is vice-president of external pageISPRS Technical Commission II, associated faculty of the ETH AI Center, director of the external pagePhD graduate school “Data Science” at University of Zurich, and his professorship is part of the external pageDigital Society Initiative at University of Zurich.

The 17:15 Colloquium by the ETH Library offers a platform for further education and discussion of topics related to libraries, museums and archives. The formula: a 30-minute lecture + a 30-minute discussion = inspiration for our daily working lives.
