Louis Rollier, as an expert, identified fossils from the Jura Mountains for various museums and collections. He was a collector of fossils and rocks himself. Today, his collection is a part of ETH Zurich’s Geological and Palaeontological Collection. Professor Rollier’s books, which are held in the ETH Library, are now accessible in a digital format at external page e-rara.

A native of the Bernese Jura, Rollier studied geology under Albert Heim, Oswald Heer and Karl Mayer-Eymar at the Federal Polytechnic Institute in Zurich. While working as a teacher at the secondary school in Saint-Imier, he dedicated himself to researching the geology of the Jura Mountains. Based on those studies, he later revised the geological maps of the Bernese Jura and its surrounding regions on behalf of the Federal Geological Commission.

In 1902, Louis Rollier became an assistant at the Geological Collection in Zurich. After Karl Mayer-Eymar’s passing in 1908, he succeeded him as the collection’s curator. From 1903 until his death in 1931, he also worked as an Associate Professor of stratigraphy and petrifaction at both universities in Zurich. He was awarded an Adjunct Professor at ETH Zurich in 1911.
