New software environment for the registration of DOIs with DataCite

The new software makes it easier for Swiss libraries and research institutions to register Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs). This allows them to make research results more accessible and increase their citation frequency.

Do you want a simpler process for DOI registration or an alternative to registration via a DOI agency? The DOI Desk has reprogrammed its software to enable Swiss libraries and research institutions to easily register DOIs for their open access publications as well as for other digital objects and research results with DataCite.

The software was developed between June 2021 and March 2022 and has been in use since June 2022.

The new DOI Desk system for DOI registration is different from the process offered by DataCite and other registration agencies in many ways:

  • The DOI Desk system collects data on a daily basis. Therefore, customers provide their metadata as xml with a timestamp on their OAI interface.
  • Customers can use the Simple Dublin Core format instead of the DataCite MetadataSchema. The DOI system then converts the metadata to the DataCite MetadataSchema and sends them to DataCite for registration.
  • In its general structure, the new system is based on the current DOI Desk system, but also implements new features.

Existing customers were automatically migrated to the new system. New customers can contact the DOI Desk if they are interested in registering DOIs with DataCite in this way.

The project was partially financed as part of the swissuniversities open science platform. More information about the project
