When cows meet robots: Agricultural sciences at ETH Zurich
150 years of agricultural sciences at ETH Zurich! A new mini-series on Explora is being created from nostalgic images and diverse materials, but also from the future perspectives of researchers.
Agricultural sciences at ETH Zurich have a long and fascinating history. During the industrialisation of Switzerland, in 1871, ETH Zurich (which was then known as Polytechnic Institute) founded the agricultural school with the aim of modernising Swiss agriculture, collecting information and expanding on it through research. The overall goal was to increase Switzerland’s agricultural self-sufficiency. Since its foundation with three professors and five students, with its teaching and research, the Institute of Agricultural Sciences has made a lasting impact on agriculture in Switzerland and across the globe. Agricultural sciences will also remain important in the future, making key contributions to more sustainable agriculture and improving food security across the globe.
Five episodes of new mini-series will be published to Explora over the next few months. They look at the importance of agricultural sciences at ETH Zurich in the era of the institute’s foundation, and of its development and research focus now and in the future.
The storytelling platform Explora features fascinating and informative stories in different formats and on topics relating to the holdings of ETH Library.
