More features, better usability – What’s new with E-Periodica?

The E-Periodica platform has been completely revised and expanded both technically and in terms of content and offers you convenient and helpful options.

external page E-Periodica, the free platform for accessing digitised journals from Switzerland, has been completely revamped and revised as well as enhanced with numerous features helpful to users. The platform’s user interface has a new, attractive look and feel that matches ETH Zurich’s new corporate design.

The changes at a glance:

  • Updated front end in the new corporate design
  • Upgraded IT infrastructure
  • Central IIIF image server serves up all images
  • Subject-based filter feature for journals on the home page
  • Clear representation of journal issues in the volume overview
  • IIIF viewer with intuitive operation and integrated table of contents
  • Statistical data on content accessible to all users in the menu
  • JPG and full-text download for single pages possible
  • Article metadata can be obtained through RIS export

With the upgraded IT infrastructure, the platform now runs on the basis of Docker containers, allowing changes to the platform to be made more easily and the web app to launch faster afterwards.
In addition, the IIIF viewer that has been newly integrated directly in the side view enables users to easily zoom in and out and swipe through the pages. The synchronised table of contents allows users to always know where they are. The full-text hit-highlighting is also now available when zooming in and out.

Searching in the volume overview is also graphically highlighted for users: Stacked images are used to visually indicate that there are several journal issues within a volume. Clicking a volume reveals an overview of the journal issues. Additional information about a journal can now be revealed in the volume overview, making it more easily accessible.
In the course of the relaunch, known bugs were also fixed in a cumulative update.
