Sustainability and scalability in the protection of coral reefs
Explora launched the new miniseries format in July. Check out the second episode now.
In the second episode, you can find out how artist Marie Griesmar came up with the idea of creating underwater habitats from clay. To make this idea scalable, she decided to use a technological manufacturing method – 3D printing. With her innovative approach that combines artistic and scientific methods, Marie Griesmar was able to collaborate with local sponsor Bodmer Ton, a clay manufacturer, to move her project in the direction she had envisioned.
Miniseries “Protecting coral reefs”
The miniseries “Protecting coral reefs – Art and science pursuing a common objective” follows Marie Griesmar as she works on her project, “Beneath the Sea – A New Form of Reef”, the goal of which is to provide new habitats for sea creatures who live in the endangered coral reefs.
Working with international research labs and as a fellow of the ETH Library Lab in 2019, Marie Griesmar developed an innovative prototype using environmentally friendly clay that can withstand the conditions in the ocean and has a surface structure that makes it a suitable habitat for coral larvae.
