Anyone looking for information about materials is well advised to consult the external pagematerialarchiv.ch database. Launched in 2008 by the Material Archive network, the comprehensive resource offers high-quality, comprehensive and detailed information. It includes around 1,300 materials including their relevant processes and possible applications.

New: interlinked content

The platform offers even more options now. It is a brilliant source of knowledge and inspiration. All available content has been newly interconnected, both online and offline. This means that the website can access both digital content AND the physical collections of the participating education institutions.

The platform is very user-friendly, offering search functions and improved filters to help you find the information you need. Its topics are more easily comprehensible, and additional details have been included. Expert architects, designers, artists and craftspeople take advantage of this large pool of information for their research and day-to-day work, while laypeople get to deepen their understanding of the content provided.

Which institutions make up the Material Archive network?

The Material Archive network was established in 2007. It is an association with broad support throughout Switzerland, comprising nine education institutions that maintain public material sample collections and display collections with examples of typical applications and semi-finished products. The ETH Library is a member of the Material Archive network. We contribute our ETH Materials Hub to materialarchiv.ch.

What is the purpose of the Material Archive network?

The network collects historical and current knowledge about materials, processes and applications. The website materialarchiv.ch makes information about the properties, manufacturing processes, processing options, history and ecology of a wide range of materials in texts and images freely accessible for specialists and laypeople. It is the only one of its kind in the world.

For more information, see the Downloadpress release of Material Archive (German only) (PDF, 1.3 MB).
