Publishing in open-access journals
Open-access journals are online scientific journals that are free to access. ETH Zurich supports and encourages its scientists who want to publish suitable articles in open-access journals.
Funding
Many open-access journals charge a publication fee for articles. The publication fees are either paid by the author, covered by an institutional membership, or covered by research funding agencies.
- On the APC Funding page, you can find all information on the funding of publication fees by the ETH Library.
- The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) finances publications that are the result of projects funded by the SNSF.
- Funds for publication of open-access articles resulting from European Commission research projects must be included in the project application.
Choosing an open-access journal
Open-access journals are listed in the external page Directory of Open Access Journals. ETH Zurich’s requirements in terms of scientific quality assurance are extremely demanding. For this reason, we recommend observing the following points when choosing a journal:
- Does the journal work with a peer-review process?
- Do renowned researchers write for this journal?
- Are there renowned researchers on the editorial board of this journal?
- Is the publisher a member of the external page Open-Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA) or another industry association?
- How high are the publication fees?
In addition, you can also find out whether a well-known colleague in your field has reviewed and recommended the journal on the external page Quality Open-Access Market (QOAM).
