Galileo Galilei

Galileo Galilei (1564–1642), philosopher, mathematician, physicist and astronomer, was a pioneer of modern science. He became famous for writing his external page"Dialogo" on the heliocentric and geocentric world view, which offended against official theological teaching. It was for this reason that Galileo was tried and condemned by the Roman Catholic Church.

This virtual exhibition throws light on Galileo's scientific achievements using original editions of his and his contemporaries’ works. Taking centre stage are the "Dialogo" and the controversy surrounding the astronomical world view.

ETH Library's exhibition from 18 January to 31 May 1999 at ETH Zurich
