TOBI

Aim of the project

  • Assessing the quality of open bibliometric data sources in a subset related to the research outputs of Swiss HEIs
  • Providing open-source code for bibliometric analyses
  • Building up expertise in bibliometric data infrastructure

Description of the project

TOBI aims to contribute towards efforts to establish fair, DORA-compliant research assessment indicators by systematically evaluating existing open bibliometric and altmetric data sources in a subset related to Swiss HEIs. The analysis will help to identify critical gaps in data quality, while addressing the issue of deduplicating and merging of items, as well as improving the interpretability of scientometric indicators. The results of the project will show to which extent open bibliometric data could be a viable alternative to commercial bibliometric datasets for the Swiss research community. Additionally, associated open-source code will be made available and accessible through the project’s Github page (external page TOBI (eth-library.github.io)) to empower institutions to try out and scrutinise classical and novel research assessment indicators on their own. The project outcome will be relevant not only for the research output assessment of individual Swiss HEIs (e.g. for evaluating their strengths and weaknesses), but also for accessible and transparent research monitoring initiatives – e.g. Open Access publishing, research funding or technology transfer in Switzerland.

Synergies and context

The project is funded by the Open Science 2021-2024 programme from swissuniversities.
There are synergies with the Swiss Year of Scientometrics (SYoS) project, also funded by swissuniversities.
