Scientometrics

Aim of the project

The project has two objectives, in particular:

  • development of a database infrastructure for bibliometric/altmetric data, which is available to the library’s customers
  • establishment of bibliometric/altmetric services.

Description of the project

Bibliometric, and increasingly altmetric, indicators and analyses are among the tools used in the quantitative “measurement” of science. Against this background, and given the importance of scientific institutions for Switzerland in general and ETH Zurich in particular, it is surprising that to date there is no central point of contact for bibliometrics and altmetrics at ETH Zurich (or in Switzerland as a whole) that offers services and advice. The planned project is intended to close the gap described: the Knowledge Management Group of the ETH Library will establish a central point of contact for ETH Zurich that maintains high-quality raw bibliometric data and offers a wide range of bibliometric and altmetric services. Over the long term, it is planned to establish a contact point for all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Switzerland. The project, therefore, also aims to determine whether and how a Switzerland-wide centre for scientometry can be implemented and which collaborations would be useful in this regard.

Synergies and context

Scientometric (especially bibliometric) indicators and analyses have become an integral part of international research. The project raises awareness of the possibilities and limitations of using bibliometric/altmetric indicators and analyses. It promotes the responsible use of research indicators at ETH Zurich and beyond.
