Migration of the Research Collection publication platform to DSpace 7

Aim of the project

The project aims to ensure the porting of all ETH-specific functionalities of the Research Collection to the latest version of the open source software DSpace. As part of this project, the user interface of the Research Collection will also be adapted to the current specifications of the ETH corporate design and the server setup and interfaces to other systems will be optimised.

Description of the project

The latest version of the open source software DSpace brings with it extensive innovations, particularly in the technical structure of the platform. The project aims to ensure that the change and the migration of existing content to the new version take place while retaining the existing range of functionalities and making the best possible use of new features available in DSpace 7.

The project includes in particular

  • analysing the new data model of DSpace 7 including so-called "entities" and developing a concept for the introduction of entities in the Research Collection for persons, journals and possibly other object types
  • the development and implementation of a new concept for hosting and server operation
  • implementation of the current ETH corporate design
  • streamlining workflows and interfaces as well as reviewing all custom functionalities with regard to a possible replacement by standard DSpace 7 functions
  • introducing the new version, including updating instructions and documentation; training of staff and customers

On completion of the project, users of the Research Collection will also benefit from the following new functionalities from the DSpace 7 feature set:

  • Completely revised, user-friendly input form
  • File upload with drag & drop
  • Multiple files can be uploaded simultaneously
  • Modern date facet (slider) in the result list
  • More visibility for individual authors through person pages in search
  • Improved accessibility of the user interface
