Digital registration of the moss collection of Dr. J. Amann (1859–1939)
Aim of the project
In this project, the historical moss collection of Dr. J. Amann is to be digitised and made publicly available.
Description of the project
The collection comprises a total of approx. 28,000 specimens, most of which come from Switzerland (approx. 14,000). The specimens were the basis for the first moss flora of Switzerland and are today an extremely important source of information for the assessment of changes in the native moss flora. In this project, the labels of the specimens are to be photographed and basic information on the finds recorded in a database. Among the specimens are a good 300 type specimens, i.e. plants on the basis of which Amann described new taxa for science. These are particularly valuable and will be digitised with special care.
All images and data are published on the website of the Z+ZT herbaria.
Synergies and context
The collected data from Switzerland are presented in the distribution maps of the National Data and Information Centre of Swiss Mosses (Swissbryophytes) and have e.g. been included in the assessments of species for a new Red List of Mosses of Switzerland.
The complete transcription and georeferencing of the findings is carried out with the help of volunteers via the Citizen Science platform of the Z+ZT herbaria.
