Aim of the project

Indexing and digitization of the image collection as a prerequisite for scientific analysis and science communication

Description of the project

The Glaciology group from the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL) in Birmensdorf has collected >50,000 images over the last few decades. They document the historical development of Swiss glaciers over the last century.

As their partner, the Image Archive will compile an inventory of the images, digitize and index them. Volunteers will georeference the images on external page Smapshot and they will be made available long-term to the general public via E-Pics Image Archive.

Explorative quantitative analyses aim to make the images a useful source of scientific knowledge. In addition to the project’s scientific potential, it could lead the way in terms of science communication, raising awareness of continual environmental change and demonstrating the importance of long-term monitoring.
