A new software environment for the registration of DOIs

Aim of the project

The purpose of the project is to upgrade the software environment of the DOI Desk. Both internal customers (ETH Zurich) and external customers will benefit from this.

Description of the project

As part of this project, an application will be developed to harvest DOIs from an OAI-PMH interface and register them with DataCite. The system is an alternative to registration directly via a DOI agency and simplifies the process. By using a different, simpler registration process, we are enabling more parties to use DOIs for their research results.

The method of DOI registration proposed above differs from that offered by DataCite in several aspects: The DOI Desk system collects data on a daily basis. Therefore, customers provide their metadata as xml with a timestamp on their OAI interface. Customers can use the Dublin Core Simple format instead of the DataCite MetadataSchema. The DOI Desk system then converts the metadata to the DataCite MetadataSchema and sends them to DataCite for registration. In its general structure, the new system will be based on the current DOI Desk system, but will also implement new features.

Synergies and context

The software to be developed for this project will enable Swiss libraries and research institutions to easily register DOIs for their open access publications as well as for other digital objects and research results. It will thus help to make it easier to find Swiss research results and thus also enable more citations of research produced in Switzerland.
